How to Learn to See Connections

For some people, seeing patterns and connections between things comes naturally. At the same time, I am constantly reminded of how little we actually see, even when we think we understand the bigger picture. After all, we cannot connect things we do not know enough about. The more you learn, the more threads your brain begins to connect. That is why curiosity is so important. The people who are best at seeing connections are often those who remain open to the possibility that they have not yet understood everything.

How the Brain Learns to Connect Knowledge

We pick up experiences, techniques, and facts, but rarely stop to reflect on what ties them all together.

The difference between learning and understanding lies in the ability to recognize the patterns underneath. People who see connections do not need to memorize everything because they understand the principles that make it possible to apply knowledge in new situations.

In educational psychology, this is known as transfer of learning — the ability to apply what has been learned in one context to another. Our brains tend to tie knowledge closely to the situation in which it was learned, and the more different a new context is, the harder it becomes to recognize what knowledge is relevant.

The techniques that make this transfer easier begin with observation and reflection.

Why Many People Miss the Patterns

Identifying connections requires the ability to recognize patterns that many people have never learned to look for. Research points to three common obstacles:

  • Context dependency
    We associate learning with the situation in which it took place, making it difficult to apply that knowledge outside of its original setting.
  • Lack of reflection
    We rarely stop to think about what happened and what lessons can be carried forward.
  • Limited variation
    We practice the same things in the same ways, preventing the brain from learning how to generalize.

Everyone sees connections, but the ability to connect many experiences, perspectives, and areas of knowledge at the same time is far less common.

Research shows that pattern recognition abilities vary from person to person. Some individuals develop strong skills in specific domains such as language, music, or visual structures, yet struggle to transfer those abilities to other areas. (PMC, 2023)

  • Most people understand that a slight change in a ship’s course can result in arriving somewhere completely different after several hours. Yet many fail to recognize that the same principle applies to habits, finances, or personal development, where small choices made consistently over time can produce major outcomes.

Studies have also shown that even when we have learned something, we may fail to use it because we do not recognize the situation as relevant. As a result, the brain never makes the connection. This is known as a recognition gap and is a well-known challenge in learning transfer. (Tandfonline, 2021)

  • A person may be highly skilled at planning strategy in a video game but fail to recognize that the same principles can be applied to project management, personal finance, or everyday planning.

From Memorization to Understanding

The main reason I dropped out of school was probably that I became bored when learning focused more on memorization than on understanding and relevance. My brain worked better when I could understand why something fit together rather than simply remembering the answer. That is why I found working in local radio, retail stores, and local television far more engaging than sitting in a classroom.

The American author and social critic Mark Twain once said:

“I have never let my schooling interfere with my education.”

I can relate strongly to that statement. Without a structured system around me, I had to learn how to learn on my own. I had to discover the patterns myself, understand how things connected, and identify the principles behind them instead of memorizing details.

Looking back, I believe this is what taught me to see the bigger picture. I needed to understand why things worked in order for them to make sense.

That is probably why so many of my articles are about connecting ideas. Whether I write about sales, leadership, psychology, or technology, I try to show that the underlying mechanisms are often the same. I have always been more interested in how things fit together than in the individual disciplines themselves. Once you begin to see the patterns between people, experiences, and knowledge, you quickly realize that learning exists everywhere.

I believe much of the reason is that I did not follow the traditional educational path.

I think the way I do because I am not constrained by education.

How to Train Yourself to See Connections

The key is to combine reflection, variation, and conscious thinking.

Use Reflection to Understand Your Experiences

After an experience, ask yourself three simple questions:

  • What does this remind me of?
  • What is similar to, and different from, previous experiences?
  • What principles were behind what worked (or did not work)?

This helps move learning from autopilot into conscious reflection.

Train Your Brain to Recognize Patterns Across Contexts

When comparing two situations — work and leisure, sports and leadership, communication and sales — ask yourself:

What do they have in common?

This is known as analogical thinking, the ability to apply experience from one domain to a completely different one. (Edutopia, Teaching Students to Transfer Their Learning, 2020)

Use mind maps, whiteboards, or notes to connect ideas. Visual representation helps make patterns more visible to the brain.

You Learn More When You Explain Things to Others

When you explain something to someone else, you are forced to organize your thoughts and discover how different pieces fit together.

Variation Improves Pattern Recognition

Do not do things exactly the same way every time. Try applying your knowledge in different situations. The more contexts you use your experiences in, the easier it becomes for your brain to connect them.

What all of these techniques have in common is that they train the brain to recognize what binds experiences together. The more you reflect, compare, explain, and apply knowledge across different situations, the easier it becomes to spot patterns.

Perhaps that is also why I often use the same examples in different articles. The underlying principles remain the same even when the situations look completely different, which is why it may sometimes seem as though I repeat myself.

From learning something new to understanding how everything fits together, learning is ultimately about connecting experiences and building upon them.

How Metacognition Helps You Recognize Patterns

Research from MIT’s Teaching and Learning Lab shows that our ability to recognize patterns improves significantly when we practice metacognition — thinking about our own thinking.

This involves asking questions such as:

  • What am I actually trying to understand here?
  • How am I solving this, and why?
  • What have I learned that I can use again later?

The more aware you become of your own thought processes, the easier it becomes to identify patterns and connect experiences.

A Simple Exercise to Improve Your Ability to Connect Experiences

Choose an event you recently experienced, whether at work, in a conversation, or during your free time, and write down:

  • What happened?
  • What does this remind me of?
  • Which principles or patterns keep appearing?
  • Where else could this experience be useful?

Do this once a week for a period of time, and you will gradually begin to notice connections that previously went unnoticed. Over time, your brain will also become faster at connecting experiences automatically.

When Theory and Experience Meet

Seeing connections is often about applying what you already know to new situations. As you train yourself to recognize patterns across experiences, you gradually develop a form of intuitive understanding, where the brain begins making connections before you consciously analyze them. This is what separates those who merely learn from those who truly understand.

At the same time, I occasionally experience the opposite. I may explain something from experience, while someone else understands it better because they have the theory behind it. The balance lies in recognizing that theory and practice are often describing the same thing from different perspectives.

I have learned through experience. Others have learned through structure.

But when experience meets theory, learning is at its best.
