The Psychology Behind Our Decisions

Did you know that your brain often makes decisions up to ten seconds before you are consciously aware of them? We believe we are in control, but much of what happens takes place unconsciously.

Decision-making is driven just as much by emotions, habits, and social influences as by logic. In fact, around 90% of our choices are emotionally driven. Advertising plays directly on this — an image, a word, or a mood can make us buy something we do not really need.

We are also guided by cognitive biases — small thinking errors that simplify everyday life but can lead us astray. We look for confirmation of what we already believe, overestimate risk after dramatic news, and allow ourselves to be influenced by the people around us.

In addition, we often choose short-term pleasure over long-term gain and overestimate our own judgment. Too many options can even lead to not choosing at all.

Understanding how the brain actually works makes us better equipped — as people, marketers, and decision-makers. It is not about what you believe in, but why others should buy what you believe in.
