Release notes are documents that accompany a new version of software or a service update. They provide users and developers with information about what’s new, improved, fixed, or known as issues in the new version.
Contents of a Release Note
A release note usually includes the version number and release date, along with details in the following categories:
- New Features:
Information about new tools or features added to the software.
Example: “Introduction of dark mode for better readability at night.” - Improvements:
Enhancements to existing features or general performance improvements.
Example: “Optimized search algorithm for faster results.” - Bug Fixes:
Details about bugs that have been resolved since the last version.
Example: “Fixed an issue that caused crashes when opening large files.” - Known Issues:
Information about existing bugs or issues the developers are aware of but haven’t fixed yet.
Example: “Some users may experience sound quality issues during video calls. A workaround is available.” - Other:
Miscellaneous information that doesn’t fit into the other categories, such as documentation updates or upcoming webinars.
Example: “A new user guide is available on our website.”
Why Are Release Notes Useful?
- Information Sharing:
Keeps users and developers informed about changes, new additions, or removed features, helping everyone follow product development over time. - User Experience:
Helps users understand and benefit from new features and improvements, while showing which problems have been fixed. - Documentation:
Serves as a formal record of all changes, useful for troubleshooting and further development. - Strengthening Customer Relationships:
Acknowledging user feedback fosters loyalty, engagement, and a sense of ownership toward the product.
Tips for Product Launches
- Acknowledge Contributions:
A simple “Thanks to [Name]” can have great impact—whether in the release note or a direct message. - Highlight Changes:
Show how new features relate to feedback. It shows you’re listening. - Engage the Community:
Invite users to continue sharing feedback. Let them know their voice matters. - Share Stories:
Include real examples or micro-case studies showing how feedback led to improvements.
By using release notes strategically to build connection, you not only inform users about what’s new, but also strengthen the relationship between them and the product.
When Feedback Goes Unrecognized
I once worked with a manufacturer in Israel to improve a product. My ideas and input led to an entirely new version—not just an upgrade, but a quantum leap. Several of the new features were based directly on my suggestions.
As the launch approached, all resellers were invited to a presentation. I was disappointed when the manufacturer presented two features I had fought for—using my exact phrasing—without even a general acknowledgement.
I took the microphone during the Q&A, asked strategic questions only I could answer, and watched them struggle to respond. It was bittersweet.
When Lack of Recognition Becomes a Business Problem
I never submitted ideas to that manufacturer again. We also stopped selling their products. Though the decision had multiple reasons, it illustrates this: when feedback isn’t appreciated, companies lose more than ideas—they lose trust and respect.
Ironically, I had more valuable ideas I never shared. Years later, others launched successful products based on the same concepts. I wasn’t bitter—just validated. The issue wasn’t me. It was the manufacturer.
This happens everywhere: ideas get reused without credit. Maybe you’ve seen your own thoughts in someone else’s presentation? It’s a surefire way to demotivate real contributors—and risk losing them entirely.
